Osttirol Adventures: the Iselschlucht

Between moving, university degree, travel and various other stress were for me the last time a half years Osttirolpause. Really a shame, I spent almost seven summers ago but in this first-class white-water area around Lienz.

So it suited me fine as I listened ask Reiner gloss on Tuesday afternoon by phone: "What do you do on Thursday? Iselschlucht? ". Difficult to reject was the rarely traveled section below the classical posterior Isel (Hinterbichl to Bobojach, WW 3-4 +) but some time on my wish list. had voted at least since the Hannes Brandstätter Iselschlucht his Osttiroler favorites.

David Krismayr and Robert Machacek us expected already highly motivated at the exit and told us about icy Temperatures at the start. In fact, frost and snow we received in Bobojach at the bridge. So fast boats unload and move better on the sunny dirt road Virgenes! At the right bank startup, most problems were with a little scouting Gekletter problems. Only the last and most spectacular point at the same time one should not we be fooled.

The route is then presented as just as short as rewarding and exciting. After a short time to retract the kick-off followed, a roughly five-foot high stage with a tricky entrance boof, and one would have liked. After that cuts the Isel their way through a low ravine with several technical and quick points in the fourth and fifth grade. Soon it was called then watch out - a completely verklauster waterfall forced us out of the boats and on the right bank spiral. Fortunately, we all had seat belts and full alpine equipment here, what made us do things other than the rather dubious first safety course quite stress free. Immediately afterwards, the subsequent spiral of a rather short discussion held - the land was preferred unanimously. So - still quite a messy double step with a waiting about seven meters high initial water case (with very hard landing) on their Erstbefahrer!

Two further passages fleet was the grand finale - a bumpy driveway and then a slide with about ten meters gap, a good four feet of it in free flight! But be careful - what looked scoutbar of 100 meters, turned out to be absolute amount of water forced passage without the tour possible. A few glances at the scouting telephoto shot later, Reiner took a heart and drove the first one - and we nearly froze. The entrance rumplige sent him to fight almost successful but bottom up down smooth! Anxious seconds, then ease up on us - although the helmet camera dangling only the accessory cord, but that's irrelevant now. The main thing is pure right hand on the helmet. With queasy feeling we went one by one in the place - luckily without incident, but with a wide grin after the impact. A little tip: enter the far right of the guiding center left, and then either to the left, or - better and easier - out to the right (!).

finally some sunshine in the otherwise rather dark,

autumnal canyon.

If the next and final point umhebbar reasonable, one would miss out back pain probably not much. But as we had no alternative but runterzubomben boot despising the total of about four meters high, shallow double step - right!

Arriving at exit, it was due to job after enjoying the last rays of sunshine for Robert and Dave return to Salzburg. Reiner and I decided another day to stick around for the next day the great distance to paddle again. A quick run to second without major incidents, and a nice load of adrenaline. Well, admittedly, not entirely without incident: one remains central in the final slide, waiting for a very fat, inclined kicker on the driving - I did not quite rumgekriegt the involuntary kickflip. So, watch out!

route:

Length: about 3 kilometers (Bobojach to bridge in Virgen, around 1 km above the entry level for Virgenschlucht)
best descent time: late summer and autumn
level: us at 75cm at the level Hinterbichl (good for first attempt)
difficulties WW (4) -5, X twice (once of which WW 6?), at least one spiral
